Chapter Eleven

Back in her room, Olive struggled with whether or not to call Jessamine again. In the end, she knew her best friend would just tell her the same thing she’d told her earlier in the morning: suck it up, be honest, and do the job she was sent there to do. But after everything that had happened between them over the course of the day, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to let go of Beckett that easily. He wasn’t just a handsome and successful actor... He was a good man. And that wasn’t so easy to come by in Los Angeles.

When Olive got out of the shower, she began sorting through the clothes, trying to pick out what was best for the rehearsal dinner. It was formal, so she decided on a silk crepe de chine floor-length dress in bright yellow. It had one shoulder, set on a drawstring, with a thick gold band and a beautiful low-slung back. The bottom of the dress drifted across the floor like a ball gown, but it was still simple and elegant, with a color that set off Olive’s mocha skin.

After she slipped on a pair of white and crystal high heels, and put on a touch of makeup, Olive grabbed her crystal-studded clutch and made her way to the front door. But when she opened it, she found Beckett standing on the other side, and almost stumbled backward.

He looked incredible. He was wearing a three-piece charcoal-gray suit with a black button-down dress shirt underneath. Olive noticed he had one hand behind his back, and instead of saying “hello,” he reached out and handed her a bundle of flowers.

“I picked them myself...on the walk over. I hope you don’t have allergies,” Beckett said with a wink.

Olive took them with a smile and gestured for Beckett to come inside. “Let me find a glass and put these in some water, then we can walk over together?”

“Sounds good to me,” Beckett said as he walked into the bedroom, then out onto her veranda. Olive filled a glass from the bar in the living room and arranged the flowers in it, before joining Beckett outside. From the edge of her balcony, they could see where the rehearsal dinner was set up. The table was next to a lovely infinity pool, and the whole area was lit up with candles and standing torches, with fairy lights strung all over the outside of the resort. The sounds of a string quartet playing by the pool, paired with the breaking of the waves and the rustling of the trees in the breeze, made Olive feel like she was actually standing in the middle of paradise. And when Beckett looked at her with a sparkle in his eyes that reflected the glimmer in her own heart, she knew she wasn’t going to be able to fight her feelings much longer.

It took every ounce of her courage, but Olive turned to Beckett and opened her mouth to finally tell
